Growing up brings big feelings, big changes and big questions - for children, teens and the people who care for them.

At Grove, child and adolescent therapy gives young people a safe, supportive space to understand their emotions, build confidence and develop tools that last. We work closely with parents and caregivers too, because the people around a child are a big part of how they grow.

Not sure your child will come along? We also offer parent coaching and support, so you can get help even if your child doesn’t attend.

What is child and adolescent therapy?

Child and adolescent therapy is a form of therapy designed for children and teenagers, adapted to their age and stage of development.

It can support young people experiencing worry and anxiety, OCD, low mood, big or hard-to-manage feelings, changes in behaviour, friendship or school difficulties, grief and loss, disordered eating, self harm, family changes, or neurodiversity. Depending on age, sessions may use talking, play, creative activities or practical skill-building.

During the first session, your psychologist will get to know your child and your family, and work with you to develop a plan built around your child’s needs.

In person or virtual

We currently offer both in-person and virtual therapy sessions. A virtual format is available for those unable to attend the clinic or who live far away.

How are sessions set up?

Sessions can be set up in different ways, depending on what will be most helpful for your child and family.

Child and therapist

Your child or teen meets one-on-one with their psychologist.

Parent and therapist

Parents or caregivers meet with the psychologist for guidance and support.

Parent and child together

Parent and child attend together to strengthen connection and communication.

Your psychologist will talk with you about which combination suits your child, and this may change over time.

Your child's age may also influence the style and set up of sessions depending on what is developmentally appropriate.

Parent coaching and support

Your child doesn’t need to attend for us to help. We offer parent coaching and support, where you meet with a psychologist on your own.

This can be a good fit if

  • Your child doesn’t want to attend therapy
  • Your child is too young to attend therapy meaningfully
  • You’d like support for yourself as a parent

Does my child need to be in distress to come to therapy?

No!

We are big proponents of preventative therapy, particularly for our younger clients. Building emotion regulation tools and self-awareness early on can help foster resilience and grit. Being able to differentiate, identify, and express our feelings is a valuable and empowering skill set.

Does my child need an assessment?

Not every child needs an assessment to start therapy. If you have questions about ADHD, Autism, learning or development, we also offer neuropsychological and cognitive assessments for children and teens. Your psychologist can talk with you about whether an assessment might be helpful.

How much does it cost?

$200–240

per 46–50 min session at Grove

The Australian Psychological Society recommends a fee of $318 per 46-50 min therapy session with a registered psychologist.

At Grove, pricing will depend on the clinician and service being offered. You can expect fees for a 46-50 min session to range from $200-240. Our goal is to provide accessible care. If you have concerns about fees, please bring them to your clinician's attention. We offer a sliding scale or concession rate for those in need.
